Coastal Navigation Fundamentals Winter Course
Know where you are with (or without) your electronic chartplotter!
Join fellow Marblehead sailors and boaters this March to practice traditional Coastal Navigation skills with the option of getting a US Sailing Certification.​
Option 1 - Coastal Navigation Fundamentals (One Class Only)
This introductory three hour course will provide a practical, hands-on training for reading paper charts, basic chartwork, aids to navigation, planning a course to steer, estimating positions, taking fixes, reading tides tables, currents and more.
Open to beginners and experienced navigators looking for a refresher course!

Navigation Tools: Students are responsible to bring their own navigation tools set OR we will have Weems & Plath sets available for purchase on the day of class for a cost of $60.

Option 2 - Coastal Navigation Certification Class by US Sailing (4 Classes + Test)
Gain high competency in traditional navigation techniques with a US Sailing certification.
​
Building upon the March 16th class, students will attend three more classes to build more competency and additional skills including plotting a Dead Reckoning (DR) course; a course corrected for leeway; determine a course to steer given the set and drift of a known current; a running fix and more. One the final day students will complete the US Sailing certification written test.

Class 5: Sunday, March 24th, 10am-1pm, Boston YC
Note: To pass the test, students will need to set aside 6-8 hours of home study between classes throughout the week.
