Get ahead of the new Boating Safety regulations
According to U.S. Coast Guard statistics, 75% of boating-related deaths occur on vessels where operators lack proper safety training.
To make us all safer, you may have heard that on January 8, 2025, Massachusetts signed the Hanson-Milone Act into law requiring boat operators to complete a boater education program and obtain a state-approved boater safety certificate.
The key provisions of the act are:
-
All individuals operating motorized vessels in Massachusetts must pass a boater safety test and carry a boater safety certificate while on the water, starting from 12 years old.
-
Individuals born after Jan 1, 1989, must obtain their certificate by April 1, 2026, with enforcement from Sept 1, 2026. Those before Jan 1, 1989, must comply by April 1, 28.
-
Individuals already holding NASBLA-approved safe boating certificates, including from other States are exempt, as their qualifications will be recognised.
-
The law also requires vessels like kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards to carry U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation devices.

In order to get ahead of these new Boating Safety regulations, Satori Sailing in conjunction with Boatwise are offering Power Boat proficiency courses, that will enable you to achieve your State and NASBLA approved safe boating certificate.
We recommend you follow this simple three step process:
1. Complete the 10hrs of Skipper Small Keelboat online course by purchasing it here.
2. Do a half day practical on the water day with Satori below.
3, Book your Boatwise Classroom and NASBLA Test day here.
If you still have questions or lack confidence on the water add a second half day practical or book some private lessons below.
The practical training can be provided either on a school boat, or on the student’s own boat.
These courses can also optionally contribute to the various Coast Guard approved Nauticed certifications.
