As the warmer months approach and we eagerly anticipate the start of the new season, it’s essential to commission our sailboats correctly to ensure safety, reliability, and optimal performance throughout the season.

At last - its time to splash!

  1. Inspect and Clean the Boat

    1. Hull and Deck: Begin by inspecting the hull for cracks, blisters, or stress fractures. Clean and wax the topsides to protect against UV damage and ensure a polished look.

    2. Drains and Scuppers: Clear any debris from drains and scuppers to prevent water buildup.

    3. Interior Cleaning: Deep clean the cabin, paying attention to hatches, windows, and wooden finishes. Oil wooden surfaces to maintain their condition.

  2. Check the Rigging

    1. Standing Rigging: Inspect swage fittings for cracks or rust and check wire halyards for “fishhooks” (bent strands) or corrosion.

    2. Turnbuckles: Remove old tape from turnbuckles, lubricate threads with Teflon-based products, and replace with fresh tape that allows water drainage.

    3. Chainplates: Look for signs of moisture or damage around chainplates. If necessary, remove them for inspection and repairs.

    4. Blocks and Sheaves: Ensure masthead sheaves and blocks are running smoothly.

  3. Examine Mechanical Systems

    1. Engine Maintenance: Change engine oil and filters if not done during winterization. Inspect belts for wear and ensure proper tension. Replace impellers every 1–2 years to prevent overheating.

    2. Fuel System: Flush old fuel from tanks if stabilizers weren’t used during winterization. Check fuel lines for cracks or brittleness caused by cold weather.

    3. Propeller and Shaft: Inspect the propeller for dings or distortion. Grease moving parts like Maxprop systems if applicable.

  4. Electrical Systems

    1. Battery Check: Ensure batteries are fully charged and holding their charge. Reinstall them if removed during winterization.

    2. Navigation Lights: Test all lights and replace burnt-out bulbs. Examine wiring for cracks or corrosion.

    3. Electronics: Verify that all onboard electronics are functioning properly.

  5. Safety Equipment

    1. Life Jackets: Inspect life jackets for rips or tears, make sure they are in date. Ensure you have enough for all passengers, especially children.

    2. Fire Extinguishers: Confirm fire extinguishers are in date and fully charged.

    3. Distress Signals: Check expiration dates on flares and replace as needed.

    4. Bilge Pumps: Test bilge pumps to ensure they operate correctly.

    5. Check horn and sound making devices

  6. Bottom Maintenance

    1. Sand and repaint the bottom with antifouling paint to protect against marine growth.

    2. Replace anodes if more than half worn.

    3. Apply Propspeed or similar products to underwater metals like propellers to reduce fouling.

  7. Freshwater Systems

    1. Flush antifreeze from freshwater tanks if used during winterization.

    2. Inspect hoses for cracks or leaks, ensuring all connections are secure.

    3. Add a water conditioning product if necessary.

  8. Docking Preparations

    1. Inspect dock lines and fenders for wear; replace as needed.

    2. Check shore power cords for charring or damage.

    3. Familiarize yourself with your slip’s layout to avoid surprises when docking for the first time this season.

  9. Final Checks Before Launch

    1. Place fenders on both sides of the boat and secure dock lines at bow and stern.

    2. Open seacocks after launch to check for leaks.

    3. Start the engine while still in the sling to confirm proper operation before being released into the water.

  10. Go for a Test Sail - Once all systems are confirmed operational, take your boat out for a short test sail to identify any potential issues before embarking on longer trips.
