Course Information
If you are planning an international dream sailing vacation in Europe or Asia, virtually every Bareboat Charter Company will require the Skipper to have some kind of certification.
The NauticEd International SLC (Sailing License and Credentials) fulfils this requirement; NauticEd is the only US government (NASBLA) recognized sail training organization who conform to the US Coast Guard approved American National Standards.
The NauticEd SLC holder must:
1. Complete and pass the NauticEd Bareboat Charter Master for Sailing Bundle of courses which is a minimum of 40 hours of on-line theory.
2. Log a minimum of 50 days of sailing, 25 of which must be as master of an appropriately sized (40’) vessel.
3. Hold a Government Safe Boating certificate: a State Boater Safety Card or a current Coast Guard 6-pax in the US, a Canadian PCOC or a safe boater license from other countries.
4. Complete and pass an on-the-water assessment of the candidates sailing/boating skills and knowledge completed by an SLC qualified instructor. (This assessment)
5. Pass a separate and independent 100-question test to verify the candidate’s theory knowledge. (Part of this assessment)
6. (For Catamaran endorsement) Take a course on Catamaran sailing and maneuvering and log at least 1 day of catamaran sailing in addition to the experience requirement listed above.
Read the SLC Requirements here.
The SLC will state any safety restrictions placed on the holder. These restrictions are based upon the holder's real practical experience of skippering vessels in the past such as: maximum length, type, and gross tonnage of the vessel in addition to the distance allowed offshore.
Before applying for the SLC assessment, please complete the self-assessment HERE. We will then work with you to customize any training requirements and mile building to polish up any rusty areas.
The SLC assessment and certification takes a full day, with a 1 hr. written plotting test, followed by 6 hrs. on the water demonstrating the skills required to Bareboat charter.
