PERFORMANCE SAILING I - FOR CRUISERS

BUILD ON THE FOUNDATIONAL CONCEPTS INTRODUCED IN THE BASIC KEELBOAT COURSE!
This course builds upon the foundational concepts introduced in the Basic Keelboat course and provides a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills enabling cruisers to sail as efficiently as possible, which reduces both battery and fuel consumption, and increases comfort, and safety.

Prerequisites: To enroll in this course, students must be proficient in the skills and knowledge covered in the Basic Keelboat course. This includes a solid understanding of fundamental sailing concepts, basic sail trim, and boat handling. Students should be comfortable with:​

Basic sailing terminology and navigation

Basic sail adjustments and trim

Steering and maneuvering a keelboat

Basic safety procedures and protocols

We will start with a classroom session covering:

Sailing Theory and Dynamics

Principles of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics

Sail shapes and their impact on performance
And then move out onto the water to cover:

Points of sail and sailing maneuvers

Tacking and gybing techniques
-
Upwind and downwind sailing strategies

Trimming and shaping sails for optimal performance

Shaping a Mainsail using available controls such as the Cunningham, backstay, traveler, halyard, outhaul, boom vang, and mainsheet

Shaping a Jib using available controls such as the halyard, fairleads, and jib
-
Proper Sail Trim Using Telltales on all points of sail

Using spinnakers and gennakers
-
Understanding weather helm, lee helm, and neutral helm

Preventing Broaching and Knockdowns
This offers a balanced mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, ensuring that participants gain the necessary skills to cruise efficiently, comfortably and safely.
