PERFORMANCE SAILING II - FOR RACERS

WITH CERTIFICATION (OPTIONAL)

DESIGNED FOR ASPIRING SAILBOAT RACERS.

This course is designed for aspiring sailboat racers and builds on Performance Sailing I covering all aspects of competitive sailing. Racers need to understand and master various techniques to optimize their boat's performance under different conditions. The course also includes 2 hours of spinnaker instruction.

Prerequisites: To enroll in this course, students must have completed Performance Sailing I – For Cruisers.

Max Class Size: 3 Students

We will start with a classroom session covering:

1. Review Sailing Theory and Dynamics and the principles of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics, Sail shapes and their impact on performance when racing

2. Racing Fundamentals

  • ​Introduction to sailboat racing rules and regulations

  • Starting strategies and techniques

  • Mark rounding and course navigation

  • Boat-on-boat tactics

3. Safety and Emergency Procedures

  • Personal safety equipment and protocols

  • Man-overboard recovery techniques

  • Capsize recovery and self-rescue methods

4. Use of GPS and deriving parameters such as VMG for improving upwind performance

And then move out onto the water to cover:

  • Tacking and gybing techniques

  • Upwind and downwind sailing strategies

  • Fine-tuning rigging and sail settings

    • Mainsail shape

    • Jib shape

    • Heavy and light wind techniques

  • The spinnaker

    • Packing a Spinnaker, Setup and Best Practices on Hoisting

    • Flying A Spinner – Reaching and Downwind

    • Gybing A Spinnaker Safely and Efficiently

    • Dousing A Spinnaker

  • On-water practice sessions and simulated racing scenarios

    • Sail a short windward-leeward course

This offers a balanced mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, ensuring that participants will gain confidence and improve their racing skills and techniques, whilst remaining safe.
